How to Validate a Trend for Your Audience Before You Create

Validate a trend by checking audience overlap, problem relevance, timing, brand fit and your ability to add something credible before committing production time.

A trend can be genuinely popular and still be wrong for you. Popularity tells you lots of people care. Validation asks whether your audience cares, whether you can help them and whether the timing works. It takes minutes, and it saves days of production on ideas that attract the wrong viewers or none at all.

1. Describe the audience precisely

Validation needs a real audience to test against. Write one sentence that names who they are, what they are trying to do and how experienced they are: "first-time home buyers in the UK who are nervous about mortgages", not "people interested in money".

If you serve several distinct groups, validate against the one this piece is for.

2. Look for overlap in your own data

Before trusting external trends, check whether the topic already shows up where your audience is:

  • Search and analytics: does it appear in your site search, top queries or YouTube Studio's Trends tab, which is built around your viewers?
  • Comments and messages: have people asked about it, or about something close to it?
  • Adjacent creators: are creators with a similar audience covering it, and how are their viewers responding?
  • Saved and shared content: do your most-saved posts connect to it?

Overlap does not need to be large. One or two genuine signals from your own audience outweigh a huge general trend with no connection.

3. Find the need the trend creates

Ask what the trend makes your audience want: a decision, an answer, a reassurance, a laugh, a way to take part. If you cannot name a need, the trend may be interesting to you but not useful to them.

Illustration: a finance creator sees a gaming meme everywhere. It is popular, but their audience has no money question about it. Using it might bring a burst of views from people who will never return. If the same meme involved a costly in-game purchase that parents were asking about, the need would be real.

4. Check fit and credibility

Would your audience trust you on this topic? Reject ideas that need a voice, claim or expertise they would not accept from you. Fit also includes values: a trend that clashes with what you stand for can cost more trust than it gains reach.

5. Check timing

Estimate how long the topic will stay relevant and how long the piece will take to make. If production takes longer than the useful window, either choose a faster format or a more durable angle. Trends vs fads can help judge how long interest will last.

6. Run a cheap test

Before a costly production, test interest with something small:

  • a poll or question in your community
  • a short post or Short on the topic
  • an email subject line or a social caption
  • a one-paragraph note in an existing piece

Set a simple bar in advance, such as "above my average saves" or "at least ten replies", and judge the result against it.

A quick scoring sheet

Score each from 0 to 2 and act on totals of 7 or more out of 10:

Question012
Does my audience show interest? No signIndirectDirect requests
Does it create a real need?NoPossiblyClearly
Am I credible on it?NoPartlyYes
Does the timing work?Too lateTightComfortable
Can I add something new?NoA littleClearly

Treat the sheet as a discussion aid, not an oracle. How to score trend relevance covers a fuller version.

Common mistakes

  • Equating broad popularity with audience relevance.
  • Skipping the test because the trend feels urgent.
  • Validating against yourself: your interests are not your audience's.
